Herne Hill releases a new "Save The Velodrome" cycling kit to raise funds.

As you probably already know, a decrepit track surface wants to close down London's Herne Hill velodrome for a few years. However, thankfully the cyclists from around the country and the local residents' efforts through Save The Velodrome campaign led to a new all-weather surface investment from British Cycling. It is wonderful, but the future of the site is still not secure, so we have launched a brand new Save the Herne Hill Velodrome cycling kit.

This track is the only surviving venue from the Olympics at 1948, but it has been around for much longer. It has been a cycling hub for more than 120 years. Moreover, many athletes like Bradley Wiggins honed their skills here. Thanks to this man's success over the last 12 months combined with Team Great Britain's astonishing Paralympic and Olympic performances, there has been an enormous increase in coaches, cycling activity, riders, and even training sessions.

However, the infrastructure of the oval desperately needs renewal, to ensure that the site is financially sustainable for the years to come and to cope with the surge in interest. The old pavilion has been derelict for a long time, the cafe is a tent, there are no changing rooms at all, and the toilets are in Portakabins. The people who have raced there and changed in the streets will confirm.

To survive and fulfil its potential it is crucial that Herne Hill receives a new pavilion and there are already plans to build one. We at the Save, the Velodrome campaign, have created the Herne Hill Trust registered a charity, with the only purpose to secure the site's long-term future. Thanks to the London Marathon Trust and Sports England 50% of the finance have already been gathered, but we still need the second half. So, this is where you can help.

You can become a Friend of Herne Hill and fund this project for only £10, and a year from now you will be able to show your allegiance to our cause with the new Herne Hill Velodrome cycling kit and even drink from one of our bidons. The jerseys were designed by apparel maestros Milltag. You can also find them from Brixton, Dever Cycles and Condor. All of the profits will go to our charity. You can get the cycle caps at Condor, but they do say Condor on them. Alternatively, you can purchase all of these things on our stand at the London Bike Show between the 17th and 20th of January. This includes wristbands, bottles and t-shirts. Including t-shirts. You can find additional information on this website.

Our campaign to Save the Velodrome

Our campaign to The Save the Velodrome continued at a public meeting last night. It was held at Dulwich College. Peter John, the Southwark Council Leader, stated that he has always said that as a district to rise to the challenges they can only work together. This includes the organisations, council, businesses and residents. He added that this campaign to save the Velodrome is absolute proof of the ambition and energy than can be created if all of our work together. This incredible man pledged £25,000 to start the fundraising drive.

Veronica Ward, who is the Councillor and a cabinet member for leisure, culture, Olympics and Sport stated that Cycling is an Engish success story. The United Kingdom's name is etched in the Olympics history. The velodrome is a crucial chapter of the story. However, it is all about the future. We must take the opportunity to make sure that the Velodrome will be saved for the future generations of cyclists. It will be an amazing contribution for the Olympics in 2012. However, more than that, it would be a boost for cyclists after that. We stay behind this campaign and will work with British Cycling and Dulwich Estate to find a solution.
